Beautiful big sister Iris introduced me to baby Te Beautiful big sister Iris introduced me to baby Teddy a few weeks ago. They have had a bit of a rollercoaster experience with newborn photography... let me share with you why they were wary about booking me, and how I convinced them!

Mama was SO excited to book her newborn session when she was expecting Iris, and chose a photographer in Milton Keynes (not me!) based on a recommendation and a tempting price offer. She loved her maternity photos, but they took AAGGGEEESSSSS to be delivered. Worth waiting for though, she thought!

When it came to her newborn photos, mama was keen on the teeny tiny curled up poses, so booked when Iris was just a few weeks new. The session happened, but days passed. And weeks... and NINE WEEKS after her newborn session, the photographer got in touch to say that due to a technical issue, she had lost their photos.

As you can imagine, they were devastated. Those early days had passed and these were images that they were never going to see again.

I get it. Computers fail. Hard drives crash. Sh!t happens! I've had an SD card corrupt in the last week. It's just a thing that's out of our control. But that's why experienced photographers have a robust backup routine that makes this eventuality VERY VERY unlikely.

Here's how I reassured this family and convinced them that I would restore their faith in newborn photographers.
1) My camera has 2 memory cards, so every shot is saved twice.
2) I download your images to my computer straight after the session.
3) I don't delete images from the memory cards until the whole gallery has been delivered. I have LOADS of SD cards and use them all in order, so I have around 5 months of raw images backed up this way. If it all goes horribly wrong, I can re-edit the raw files.
4)My computer hard drive is backed up to an external hard drive.
5) Both my computer hard-drive and the external hard drive are backed up to two separate, secure, cloud-based backups.

I'd love to hear from any experts who think I could do more. Really, I'm always open to learning more about things I'm not expert on.
I had a lovely day yesterday teaching a workshop o I had a lovely day yesterday teaching a workshop of professional photographers more about newborn photography.

Rory was the best model I could have asked for... he was totally not bothered by all the attention and slept straight through the whole thing!

This is after I told everyone that he might be challenging as he's more than a month old... which just goes to show that babies of any age can have a beautiful newborn portrait session!

Today I have older babies - wish me luck (and smiles!)
