Our Family Photoshoot Experience in Milton Keynes – A Parent’s Review

** Written by a mum who came to Capture the Light Photography for a family photoshoot in 2024 **

I recently did something I’ve been meaning to do for years – we booked a family photoshoot in Milton Keynes! With young kids, life can be pretty hectic, but I wanted to capture some beautiful moments together before they all grow up in a blink. I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous going into it. I kept imagining chaos – kids refusing to smile, running around the studio, the baby having a meltdown. But thankfully, the whole experience turned out to be so much better than I imagined, and that’s largely thanks to the incredible photographer we worked with.

Here’s a bit about how it went and why I’m now recommending this photographer to anyone looking for a family photographer in Milton Keynes!

Pre-Photoshoot Worries: What Will the Kids Be Like?

When you’ve got three kids, any event that involves being still for more than five minutes feels like an impossible dream. I was genuinely worried about how the kids would behave, especially the youngest, who’s right in that “I do what I want” stage! Emma is the owner and photographer at Capture the Light Photography, and she reassured us from the start. She told us not to worry too much – family sessions are supposed to be fun, relaxed, and even a little bit crazy.

As soon as we arrived, it was clear that Emma knows exactly how to work with children. My oldest, who is normally a bit shy in front of the camera, actually started laughing within minutes! Emma has this magical ability to make everyone feel at ease, especially the kids, with fun games and silly jokes that got them all smiling naturally.

What to Wear? What to Bring?

This was another thing I was fretting over before the shoot – what on earth were we all going to wear? I wanted us to coordinate, but not look like we were trying too hard, if you know what I mean. Thankfully, Emma sent over some advice beforehand that was super helpful. We went for soft, neutral colours and avoided any big logos or loud patterns. The outfits looked great together without being too matchy-matchy.

As for what to bring, I packed a couple of small toys and snacks for the little one, which came in handy during the few moments he got restless. But honestly, the session kept flowing so smoothly that the kids were engaged almost the entire time.

The Photoshoot: Posing, Playing, and All the Fun

On the day of the shoot, we went to the lovely studio in Olney, near Milton Keynes, which has a really relaxed vibe. The main studio space is really well equipped with props and different backdrops, so we had lots of choice. Emma guided us through the poses, but also encouraged some playful moments in between. It was a perfect mix of structured shots and candid ones where the kids were just being themselves.

I especially loved how she captured our family dynamic – those little moments of the older kids playing with their younger sibling, my husband making the baby giggle, or our 6-year-old pulling a cheeky face! It felt like she really got us as a family and knew how to bring out the best in each of us.

The Results: Memories to Treasure

When we returned a week later to see our gallery of portraits,  I was blown away. Emma’s talent was clear from the start, but seeing the final images was something else. They managed to capture my children’s personalities so perfectly.  And she even made my husband and I look halfway decent after wrangling three kids for an hour!

The whole experience was honestly a lot of fun, and we now have a set of gorgeous family photos that we’ll treasure forever. If you’re looking for a family photographer in Milton Keynes, I can’t recommend Capture the Light Photography enough. Emma was patient, professional, and most importantly, she made the whole process stress-free and enjoyable – which, let’s be honest, is no small feat when kids are involved!

So, if you’ve been thinking about booking a family photoshoot but aren’t sure if it’ll be worth the effort, go for it! It’s a chance to capture your little crew just as they are right now – messy, fun, and full of life. And trust me, the results will be more than worth it.
